Scams used to need a stranger with a good story. Now they only need a message that looks exactly like someone you trust.

Not a clumsy email full of spelling mistakes. A wedding invitation from a friend. A bank alert with the right logo. A payment screen that says "Successful". A voice on the phone that sounds exactly like your child.

Every few years the packaging changes. The phone call became the email, the email became the fake website, the website became the malicious app, and now the app is becoming a deepfake. The people who get caught aren't the careless ones. They are simply the ones who reacted before they had a chance to think.

And the lesson almost always arrives in the same order: first the loss, then the learning.

FACE TO FACE

Street Deception

The original scam: a story, a stranger and a little too much trust.

PHONE & INBOX

Calls, SMS and Email

Impersonating banks, officials and bosses at scale.

APPS & SITES

APKs, QR Codes, Fake Websites

Lookalikes that don't look dangerous at all.

NOW

AI Voices and Deepfakes

Seeing and hearing are no longer proof that it is real.

Scams don't die, they adapt. And this page exists because, for once, you can learn the pattern before it costs you anything.

Here's the part that stings, and I want to name it before we go any further.

You've probably said it. About the fake courier SMS. About the "investment" in a friend's chat group. About the stories of people losing their life savings: I would never fall for that.

That was never stupidity, and it was never arrogance. It's how scams work. A scam isn't one lie. It is a false reality, carefully built from fear, urgency, trust, greed, love and authority, so that in one particular moment you do something you would never normally do. The person on the other end is not attacking your phone. They are attacking your judgement.

The tragedy is that most people only learn this afterwards: RM1,000 lost, then RM10,000, then a lifetime of savings. Then they start researching. Then they tell their family. Always one step too late.

The only way to be scam-proof is to understand the pattern while nothing has happened yet, before the loss makes the lesson obvious.

So let me show you where this started.

The Real Case That Started This Book, in Numbers

This book did not begin as a book. It began when scammers started impersonating my company, OPERiON, to trick people into transferring money to them.

I reported it to the police and to CyberSecurity Malaysia. I posted notices on our website and social media. And it kept going for 18 months.

Every two to three days, I received a call or a message from a victim, or from someone who nearly became one. Some had already lost over RM10,000. Some got suspicious halfway through paying and contacted me to check. A few were lucky enough to find me before they transferred anything.

Posting a disclaimer wasn't enough. Filing reports wasn't enough. Replying one by one wasn't enough. Scams were spreading faster than I could warn people.

So I asked a different question: what if people could learn to recognise a scam before it happens to them?

Looking closely, I found that every scam, however modern, comes back to the same three things: Deception, Illegal Gain, and Lasting Harm. Technology only changes the delivery. The tricks that make people act - fear, urgency, trust, greed, authority, emotion, convenience - barely change at all.

A scam can take seconds. The consequences can last for years: the retirement fund, the children's fees, the business, the relationships, the confidence. It is never only the money.

That is why the book is called Before It's Too Late.

You don't need to be careless to be scammed. Scammers don't need you to be stupid. They only need you to react before you think.

Who Am I to Tell You This?

I'm Ts. Lukas J. Tan. I'm not a cybersecurity academic, and that's the point.

For two decades I've built, run and fixed technology businesses from the inside. I'm the Founder and CEO of OPERiON Ecommerce & Software Sdn Bhd and the Founder and Organising Chairman of the Penang Digitalisation-AI Conference & Exhibition (PDX). Websites, email, payments and digital platforms are my daily work, and I guide organisations through digital transformation and AI.

But what qualifies me to write this book isn't the CV. It's that I experienced the problem myself. My company's identity was used to hurt other people, and for 18 months I watched victims reach out for help.

I took what I learned into schools, where I began sharing scam-prevention lessons with students. That work grew into the ScamAlert Junior programme: 50+ schools and more than 10,000 students so far.

That vantage point is why I can tell you what this page is really about: not that scams exist (you already know that), but exactly how ordinary people get caught, and the habits that stop it.

The Message Is Already Travelling

This book didn't stay on a shelf. It became a movement, and the numbers show it.

Scam-Proof is read by Malaysian and international readers, available online and in bookstores including Amazon, eBook and Kinokuniya, and published by AcePremier.

It started with two people going school by school in Penang with the support of Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Pulau Pinang. Today the same awareness has reached more than 10,000 students and a national audience. And our children's comic, ScamAlert Junior, now reaches 400 schools across Penang.

You are not the first to read it. You are one of the readers helping it spread.

Why Scams Work (and Exactly When You Can Stop Them)

Every scam lives through the same two moments.

Moment one: the message. Something arrives. A link, a call, a QR code, an invoice, a voice. It feels urgent, official or familiar. This is when you still have everything: your money, your data, your options. All you need is a pause.

Moment two: the loss. The transfer is made, the OTP is shared, the app is installed. Now the only choices left are reporting, regret and recovery, and they are slow and uncertain.

Almost all scam education happens in moment two. This book is built for moment one.

The same pressure shows up in nearly every case: urgency, pressure, impatience and unpredictability. Their only job is to stop you from thinking. Look at what that pressure typically looks like on a phone:

3 unread · all look completely normal
"You're invited to our wedding!"Message from a friend
WhatsApp · attachment: invitation.apk
A cheerful invitation with a file to install. The app asks for access to SMS, contacts and files.
Looks like a friendPermission doesn't match purposeStop
"Urgent: change of bank account"Message from a supplier
Email · same name, same signature, same thread
Please send this month's payment to our new account today.
Looks like a supplierVerify through a second channelVerify
"Mum, I had an accident"Voice call
Unknown number · the voice sounds exactly like your child
I need money right now, please don't tell anyone.
Sounds like familyCall back on the number you knowPause

Illustrative composite examples based on the scam types covered in the book. Not one of them needs you to be careless.

That's not a technology problem. It's a judgement problem, and judgement can be trained. You don't need to become a cybersecurity expert. You need a few habits that interrupt the scammer's script.

Those habits are the spine of the book.

The Moment That Decides Everything

Some of the people who contacted me during those 18 months had already lost money. Others found me while the payment was still pending, because something felt slightly off and they wanted to check.

That second group is the whole reason this book exists. They hadn't studied cybersecurity. They didn't know the technical names. They just paused, doubted and verified. And that was enough.

"Something doesn't feel right. Let me check first."

That's the entire defence, compressed into two sentences.

Not "which antivirus do you use." Not "how technical are you." Not "how educated are you."

Did you stop, and did you verify?

Building that instinct has a name in the book: cognitive immunity. You don't memorise every scam. You learn to recognise deception, so that when a brand-new one appears, even one that has never existed before, your instinct still fires.

Scams change shape like the Monkey King's 72 transformations. Your defence has to change with them, and that is what this book trains.

The Eight Defence Habits: How Ordinary People Stay Safe

The book keeps returning to eight defence principles, simple enough to use the next time something feels off:

  • Pause. Scams love speed. The more urgent it feels, the slower you go.
  • Verify. Never trust a single source. Call back, check the full link, confirm separately.
  • Question. Why does a wedding invitation need access to my SMS? Why has the supplier's bank account changed?
  • Separate. Keep banking and important data away from risky browsing.
  • Update. Devices, apps, passwords, and your own knowledge.
  • Confirm from your side. Don't rely on the other party's screenshot, receipt or "proof". Check your own system.
  • Report. Being scammed is not shameful. Silence only helps scammers repeat.
  • Share. Scams crumble when victims turn into educators.

Look at that list. None of it needs a technical background. None of it needs expensive software. And no amount of cleverness replaces it, because every habit requires you to do something at the right moment. That's why a reader who knows these eight beats a reader who knows a hundred scam names.

Every chapter then closes with four boxes, so you always know what to do next:

1

Takeaway

The one thing to remember from the chapter, in plain words.

2

Act Now

What you can do today to protect yourself, your family or your business.

3

Stop This

The everyday habits that quietly leave the door open to scammers.

4

Core Defence

The principle that still works after the scam changes shape.

No jargon. No fear. In the moment that matters, nobody rescues you. You pause, you verify, you protect.

Scam-Proof: Before It's Too Late is exactly what we need right now. Lukas does a brilliant job using real-life stories to show just how easy it is to fall victim to online scams, and more importantly, how to avoid them. The language is refreshingly simple, and the strategies he shares are practical enough for anyone to start using right away. From securing your e-banking to spotting fake QR codes, Lukas makes cyber safety something we can all understand and act on. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to stay one step ahead in today’s digital world.

Paul YeoChief Executive Officer, Confexhub Group

I don't usually talk about this, but I once fell victim to a scam — and it was one of the most frustrating and humbling experiences I've faced. The confusion, the regret, the "how did I not see this coming?" moments... they lingered for a long time.

That’s why Scam-Proof: Before It's Too Late by Ts. Lukas resonated with me so deeply. This book isn't just another guide on cyber safety — it’s a lifeline. Ts. Martin Stefan Mueller, RTCA

When I first heard that Ts. Lukas J. Tan was planning to write a book on scam prevention, I was honestly surprised — because it takes great courage to address a topic that’s often ignored until it’s too late. But knowing Lukas, I also knew he would approach it with deep conviction and clarity.

From my perspective as a speaker and a mental wellness trainer, scams don’t just cause financial loss to individuals — they leave emotional wounds that ripple through families and communities. Some victims carry their trauma silently for years, especially if they never meet the right person to guide them through recovery.

This book is more than just information — it’s an important initiative to protect society, raise awareness, and plant the seeds of early prevention. I truly admire Lukas for using his voice, experience, and platform to lead this brave movement. It’s a much-needed resource in today’s digital world, and I fully support it.

Scam-Proof: Before It's Too Late – A Must-Read in Today’s Digital World

Just finished reading Scam-Proof: Before It's Too Late - How to Spot, Stop & Outsmart Scammers — and I have to say: salute to Lukas for putting together such a timely and practical guide.

As a financial consultant, I’ve seen how scams don’t just wipe out savings — they break trust, confidence, and even mental well-being. This book doesn’t just highlight how scams work. It teaches Malaysians how to protect themselves, especially in this age of APK malware, fake e-wallets, and public Wi-Fi dangers.

What stood out to me Real-life examples that hit close to home, step-by-step security habits, a mindset shift: “We can’t stop scammers from trying, but we can 提升认知,守住我们的财富 increase awareness and protect our wealth.”

I personally experienced having my face cloned by scammers. Even after I lodged a police report and got the account taken down, the next day they opened 10 new fake profiles using my face to target more victims. It’s relentless.

That’s why this book matters. Awareness is the best protection. If you use a smartphone or do online banking — this book is for you. Great job, Lukas — and thank you for contributing to a safer digital Malaysia.

Scam-Proof: Before It's Too Late by Ts. Lukas J. is a highly relevant and eye-opening book that provides both personal and practical insights into the growing threat of scams in our digital age. Drawing from his own experience as a victim of corporate impersonation, Ts. Lukas shares a compelling narrative on how scams impact individuals, businesses, and communities at large. What makes this book powerful is how it moves beyond technical jargon, instead offering real-life examples, step-by-step prevention tactics, and simple analogies that resonate with everyday Malaysians.

He explains how modern scams — ranging from APK malware to AI-generated voice fraud — exploit trust, urgency, and emotional triggers. I appreciate how Ts. Lukas doesn't just diagnose the problem, but also emphasizes action: from personal vigilance to community education, and even policy-level collaboration. His advocacy for cybersecurity awareness in schools and SMEs demonstrates a genuine commitment to protecting society, not just himself.

Overall, I find Scam-Proof: Before It's Too Late a timely and empowering guide that makes digital safety feel achievable for everyone. It has changed the way I view online security — not as an IT concern, but as a shared responsibility. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to better protect themselves and others from scams.

Be honest with yourself here, because this book isn't for everyone.

Close This Page If...

You're a cybersecurity engineer looking for a technical manual. This book deliberately uses stories, local cases and plain explanations instead.

You believe "it will never happen to me" and nothing will change that. Most people who lose money believed the same thing the day before.

Keep Reading If...

You use WhatsApp, online banking, QR payments or e-wallets, and you want to know what to do when something looks real but feels wrong. Or you worry about parents, children or staff who could be the next target.

Or you run a business where one trusted email, one "new bank account" or one rushed payment could cost real money. This is the book you read before the message arrives.

Imagine 30 Days From Now...

You've read the book, and for the first time you know why a message made you feel rushed - and what to do about it. Not a vague unease. A method.

You've changed a few small things. You check the full link before you tap. You stopped installing apps from chat messages. You use a separate browser for banking and you log out every time. You know what an app permission should and shouldn't ask for. Your parents have heard the one sentence that matters: call back on a number you already know.

Now imagine 90 days from now.

The next message arrives. It looks perfect. It's urgent, official, even personal. And this time you feel the pause, the small, calm voice that says verify first. You call back. It was a scam. Nothing was lost. Nobody ever finds out how close it was.

The next time something looks real and feels wrong, you already know what to do.

Now imagine two years from now.

Scams are more convincing. AI voices are better, fake sites are cleaner. And none of it works on you the way it used to, because you never memorised the tricks. You learned the pattern. When a friend's account is hacked, you're the one who tells them what to do. When a colleague nearly pays a fake invoice, you're the one who says "let's verify from our side." You've turned from a possible victim into the person who protects others.

And this time, when the news reports another wave of losses, you won't feel that old knot in your stomach. You'll be the person who learned before it was too late.

The people who wait for a scam to teach them are exactly where every victim starts. Informed. Correct. And too late.

Three Paths. You're About to Choose One.

This is the part where I stop being diplomatic.

1

Decide it won't happen to you

Tell yourself you're too careful, too educated, too tech-savvy. Most victims said exactly that. The scammers don't need your agreement; they only need one rushed moment, and the numbers of people calling for help didn't stop for 18 months.

2

Learn it after the loss

This is the usual path, and it's the expensive one. RM1,000 gone, then you learn. RM10,000 gone, then you learn. A lifetime of savings gone, then you learn. You'll understand scams perfectly, and still not get the money back.

3

Read the book and build the habits this week

Read it. Apply the Act Now boxes. Tell your family. In a world of ever-better scams, the person who learned the pattern first wins by default.

The scammers don't care which path you pick. They keep adapting either way.

Why RM39.90? (The Real Answer)

If this book can save you from a scam that costs RM10,000 or more, why am I selling it for the price of a meal?

Three reasons.

First, the people most at risk are not engineers. They're parents, retirees, shop owners, finance clerks and students: people with a phone, a bank account, and no time to study cybersecurity. RM39.90 removes every excuse between you and the decision, tonight.

Second, I'd rather have thousands of ordinary people properly prepared than keep answering victims' calls after the money has gone. I spent 18 months doing exactly that, and it taught me that warning people one by one will never keep up with scammers. This book is my answer. Victims shouldn't carry shame, and shared knowledge makes the whole society stronger.

Third, some readers will want to go further with me, through my talks, my schools programme or the wider mission. Some won't, and the book stands entirely on its own. If you never speak to me and one day you pause, verify and stop a scam, the RM39.90 did its job.

The RM39.90 isn't the cost. The cost is learning this lesson from a scam, when you could have learned it before it's too late.

Your Next Step

You've read this far because part of you recognised the feeling: watching a scam story on the news and wondering, once again, whether it could have been you or whether you'll add it to the list of the ones you only watched.

Look - what if I'm wrong about all of this?

You're out RM39.90 and a few evenings of reading, and you still walk away understanding how scams work better than most people around you. Not the end of the world.

But what if I'm right?

What if the next message really is perfect, and it's your mother who gets the call, your finance team who gets the invoice, or your own phone that gets the "wedding invitation"? What if the only thing between you and that moment is a few seconds of habit you could start building this week?

Common Questions (And Real Answers)

"But I'm not technical. Will I understand it?"

Yes. The book was written for the general public, with non-technical stories, easy graphics and everyday analogies (like phone permissions being house keys). You don't need an IT background, only the willingness to stop and check.

"I'm careful. Do I really need this?"

Careful people get scammed too, because scams don't target carelessness, they target emotion: fear, urgency, trust, love, authority. The book explains why smart, educated, tech-savvy people are caught, and how to build a pause into those exact moments.

"Won't it be out of date as scams change?"

The book focuses on the patterns beneath every scam rather than a list of this year's tricks. Scams adapt - but urgency, false trust and fake proof stay the same, and so does the defence: pause, verify through another channel, confirm from your side.

"Is it relevant to Malaysia?"

Very. The examples draw on Malaysian situations: APK wedding-invitation scams, e-wallet and QR fraud, local banks, data breaches, and organisations like MYNIC, MyCERT, PDRM and MCMC.

"Is it useful for my business?"

Yes. Parts 6, 7 and 4 cover fake websites, business email compromise (fake invoices, CEO impersonation, supplier bank changes) and data breaches. Your team is your first line of defence, and the book is written to be shared with them.

"Is it only for adults?"

The book is written for adults and young adults. Children have their own programme, ScamAlert Junior, which the author also runs in schools; this page is about the Scam-Proof book itself.

"Can I buy it as a gift?"

Many readers buy it for parents, children, colleagues or employees: the people they most want to protect. Often the strongest reason to buy it isn't "I might be scammed" but "someone I love might be."

"What exactly is the Safe Delivery Guarantee?"

If your copy arrives damaged, misprinted or wrong, email office@k-publisher.co.uk within 7 days of receiving it with a photo, and we will send a replacement at no extra cost, including delivery. It covers the condition and delivery of the book within Malaysia.
